PSYCH-K® vs Hypnotherapy: What's the Difference?

If you have wondered whether PSYCH-K® is a form of hypnosis, you are not alone, and it is a gentle, fair question to ask.
The honest answer is no. But I would rather explain what that actually means than just leave it at a simple no, because the difference is something you can feel, not just a technical detail.
What Hypnotherapy does
Hypnotherapy guides you into a relaxed, focused state, sometimes called a trance. Your conscious mind softens and steps back a little, and in that quieter place, your subconscious becomes more open to new suggestions. A trained hypnotherapist uses that gentle window to offer new ideas or perspectives directly.
This is real, meaningful work, and it has helped many people find genuine relief. I want to honor that fully, rather than brushing past it just to explain something different.

What happens in a PSYCH-K® Session
With PSYCH-K®, you are never guided into that kind of relaxed, altered state. You stay fully present with me the whole time, eyes open, talking, aware of everything happening around you.
Here is what that looks like in practice. Together, we gently name a belief that feels connected to what you are working through, something like "I am not safe unless I am in control," or "rest has to be earned." Then I use muscle testing, which is simply a way of listening to what your body already knows, to understand whether that belief is quietly running underneath, at a level deeper than what you might say out loud. This gap between what we say and what we are actually carrying is so often where people feel stuck, without quite knowing why.
Once we understand what is really there, we move into a balance, a set of guided movements that gently supports your nervous system in taking on a new belief in its place. Then we check in again, together. I am never telling you something has shifted. Your own body shows us, gently, in real time.
This is the part of this work I find most moving. It does not ask you to be relaxed enough, or open enough, to accept something while your guard is down. It simply meets you exactly where you are, fully awake, and works with what is already true in your body.
PSYCH-K® vs Hypnotherapy: Where they Genuinely differ
Hypnotherapy gently changes the state you are in, and then introduces something new into that softened space. PSYCH-K® stays with you in your everyday, waking state, and uses your body's own quiet feedback to find what is already there and support it in shifting.
Neither one is more mysterious than the other. Both are thoughtful, structured processes, and both are rooted in the same gentle truth: the beliefs shaping our lives are so rarely the ones we could name if someone simply asked us.
Something Words can only Point to
I can describe the process to you, and I hope this has helped explain how it works. But PSYCH-K®, at its heart, is something felt rather than something explained. The shift that happens in a balance is not really an idea you understand intellectually. It is something your body experiences directly, and most people find they only truly understand it once they have felt it for themselves.
Where this Leaves You
If hypnotherapy has been meaningful for you, that is real, and there is no reason to set it aside. If you have ever found it hard to fully relax into that hypnotic state, or noticed a shift fade with time, this may help explain why PSYCH-K® can feel different when you experience it.
Neither of these replaces medical or mental health care, and PSYCH-K® is always meant to sit alongside whatever support or treatment you are already receiving, as a gentle complement to it, never in place of it.
A Few Questions Worth Answering
Is PSYCH-K® a type of hypnosis?
No. There is no trance or altered state involved. You remain fully present and aware throughout, and the process is guided by your body's own response through muscle testing, rather than suggestion offered in a relaxed state.
Why does it matter whether there is a trance or not?
Because it shapes where the change actually comes from. In hypnotherapy, someone gently offers a new idea while your conscious guard has softened. In PSYCH-K®, your own body confirms what is truly there, and confirms again once something has shifted. Nothing is introduced from outside. We simply find what is already present, together.
Can I do both hypnotherapy and PSYCH-K®?
Yes, and many people do, at different times or for different needs, since each works with the subconscious in its own way.
Does PSYCH-K® replace therapy or hypnotherapy?
No. It is designed to complement other approaches to your wellbeing, never to replace them. Any treatment or care you are already receiving should continue as advised by your qualified professional.
If any of this resonates, the best next step is simply to experience it for yourself.
